EP203 Why Energy Isn't the Problem: Exploring Thermal Comfort and IEQ with Robert Bean (January...
In this engaging episode of the Building HVAC Science Podcast, host Eric Kaiser is joined by Robert Bean, an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer and a renowned expert on indoor environmental quality (IEQ). Together, they explore the intricate relationship between architecture, thermal comfort, and HVAC systems. Robert shares insights from his extensive travels, observations of traditional architecture, and key lessons from his work in designing high-performance buildings.
The discussion highlights the critical distinction between energy efficiency and human comfort, emphasizing that discomfort often drives energy use. Robert explains foundational concepts like mean radiant temperature (MRT) and operative temperature and how they profoundly affect perceived comfort. He challenges common industry assumptions, such as relying solely on air temperature for thermal comfort, and advocates for a comprehensive approach that includes radiant, convective, and architectural solutions.
Listeners will gain practical advice on incorporating IEQ principles into design, leveraging tools like the ASHRAE Standard 55 and Robert’s free eBook, Thermal Comfort Principles and Practical Applications for Residential Buildings. The conversation concludes with a call to prioritize human comfort in every aspect of building design and operation.

Used mine like 5x before it stopped pumping. Wouldn't recommend
"Three points of contact." Slow the video down to 25% and you can clearly see he is using 2 points of contact. Both the alternate hand and foot are not touching the ladder with each step up resulting in only a single hand and a single foot touching the ladder. That means his body is only touching 2 points of contact. Anyone that has ever tried climbing a ladder using an actual 3 point of contact knows how cumbersome and ridiculous the concept is. Sounds great for OSHA though.
I believe you did not put the light on in testo. Most of the time the parameters are off the screen
OMG!
Oh sir, I have dumb questions! Why do thermostats?
lay it on us..!
Because they can't "stand being dynamic!
I would love for you to go into depth with the testo app. Especially the new multi site measurement and the 420 flow hood portion of the ap. Can’t seem to figure out the multi site measurement portion . Thanks
#askelk how did y'all get to be so awesome?
Looking for the AWA probe microwave
I have my personal CO meter with me nearly everywhere I go, restaurants, hotels, in trucks and cars as well as visiting friends. I have uncovered several CO events and provided assistance in solving a carbon monoxide concern. It is more common for people to be suffering from a CO exasperated illness than most realize.
Damn, Jets, the damn jets I just don’t know how I can believe a word Tyler says…😂
Great program helping those who have stumbled and deserving of a second chance.
The video is nice and also the tool. Why would I spend 2 or 3 thousand dollars on an equipment. That you still need to brace. On the condenser and by the coil. Because they don’t have the fittings for that. So for me it’s dumb because I still would have to do the bracing like always. And I could do my bends nice and neat with my benders. Now with all those fittings I have more chances to have leaks everywhere.
is this video for regular people with a home or it is for tech? WHAT THE HELL REGULAR PEOPLE NEED ALL THIS INFORMATION? FOR WHAT?
That Simpson 260 was the workhorse in its day
👎
I wear mine walking into the job, especially if there are additional fuel burning appliances on site. You should wear it most places. You won’t believe where you can find CO. Pool heaters are a big offender, and mine kept showing high CO on our rear balcony on a cruise ship
If we use a new equipment, you get 40.4 when it’s calibrated for methane and 18.4 and 12.4 of these levels considered high
😂
I spy waffles
acceptable to cover hole with high temp silicone?
I be thinking the same thing
Wish I could snag the digicool in the background how much you asking
I be thinking the same thing
very nice but no real brazing, problem is the connection is different than oxygen-acetylene, If they are the same I will buy one.
Poderia me passar um tutorial do início ao fim de como saber o co e con ?
I’m a gas engineer over here in England I bought the 030 just for domestic boilers it lasted 2 weeks and was fucked sent it back told it was repaired and re calibrated same thing false readings battery bolloxed. Got a full refund don’t buy it as it’s dog shit
I was probe
Nice simple explanation! I need that sign behind you! Because that's sign is as accurate as your explanation 🤣
You've given us an interesting idea..!
Got a copy of one of theses trainings? I’ve seen others of Tyler’s on UA-cam.
Fascinating conversation.
Informative video. But I have a doubt. Why does spiral and round duct requires 2 wholes where rectangular ones need only one?
A single point measurement can be used in round or rectangular duct, the accuracy is generally lower with a single-point measurement though. If higher accuracy is desired, a multi-point test using five test holes in rectangular and two test holes in round duct can be performed.
Julian's story is such an inspiration!
This is awesome!! I have an 8yr old daughter and have been considering a UA-cam channel dedicated to teach her the trades. I'm a licensed plumber and HVAC. With all the UA-cam kids watch, especially my daughter, i thought this might be something constructive. I'll start following your channel Elana😊
Still a Good video. Thank you , Jim 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍.
WHat's that static PSI look like?
In an era of BS, this is the one thing that’s actually real. A skilled licensed trade doesn’t come easy, but the life it affords is pretty great in the long term. HVAC, plumbing, and electric at the way to go.
Omg Corbett he looks sooo much like Grace wow ❤
The A-Team
Can 327 analyze for Natural Gas ?
A testo 327 (or all combustion analyzers for that matter) analyze the flue gas after combustion. You would need a combustible gas leak detector (not analyzer) to detect natural gas. :We sell them at TruTech: trutechtools.com/gas-leak-detector.html If you truly mean analyze natural gas for what it is made of, that is usually not found in a protable instrument.
Jeez I needed this
Great up-to-date info., thank you for posting. Cheers from Vancouver Island.
All the nay sayers on UA-cam are knocking the hell out of these. I spoke with a well respected HVAC tech a couple of days ago whi said this is all he uses any more. I distinctly remember the pro plumbers who po pood PVC drain pipe many years ago. They swore that would not work too. Im pretty sure the nay sayers are scared shirtless of guys like me that do all my own work. The REASON that I do all my own mechanical work is because every single time i had a so called pro do anything, they fucked up the job. There are very very few real pros out there today. Most are new system sellers, or parts canon people.
it is a GREAT program!
Looking to purchase a flow hood for a school district. 5 schools with mostly geothermal hps for every classroom, ranging from 3 to 6 ton for classrooms, gyms are 15 ton heat pumps and cafes are 8 ton. Looking to find a capture hood that will work for all of the systems but not sure if one exists, there's registers that designs are as low as 150cfm and the gym units are 1020 cfm per register. But the returns if I was going to test those in the gym are 3500cfm through a 32x32 grill and in the classrooms many are 24x36 return grills with up to 1800cfm. I've heard if I get the high cfm hood, it won't be accurate for low cfm even though they advertise the hood to be good for like 50 to 2500cfm. Looking to purchase asap but don't want to use something I can't trust. Any advice would be very helpful. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help out
We'd be happy to help guide you through this and either get you the right tool or point you in the right direction. It's best to call us at 1-888-224-3437, ask for Josh. Thanks!
South Sudan
We pray to Almighty to give you more blessings ahead in the field of HVAC industry. Thank alot Jim watching from South in African continent
Whats funny is the 8.5 duct diameters thing, ive seen manometer manufacturers say anywhere between 8 and 13 ft downstream and 3 to 6 upstream from restrictions or changes in duct. In the real world, when is that ever even close to possible. I havnt found many if at all in my 27 years. So makes you wonder
I know this is old but figured i mention for anyone considering getting this, seems to be ok for smaller airflows like residential and small commercial systems but i havnt had much luck with mine on anything over about 2000 cfm for some reason. I could do a 5 point 6 times and each time would have very drastic varying results like over 1000 cfm off. I try to keep it as strait as possible and timing equal on each hole but just cant trust it.
Honestly not sure how much I would trust any of this guys info here. When asked the tonnage of the equipment he strait up said idk,I never looked at the air handler. How are you going to set required airflow without knowing how much the system should have to begin with? You don't. Some units have a max static of .5,some .7 some 1.0" sooooo..... the equipment/design is where you start and end. Who cares if you get the wanted cfm to each register when the equipment itself may be suffering for it. I just don't get this,I'm also not finishing the video so if he somehow redeems himself I apologize.
Update this topic with a new video! Great info!
Erics a super smart guy and i have alot of respect for him but this short was very useless/pointless why post this?
